Parent & Teacher: A Conference Blessing
by
David M. Tookey

The father is from another land.
His eyes are dark and deep-set.
Rough, tired hands
rest in an empty lap.

He sits and listens
saying nothing.
His child--also from that eternity--
is my student.

After formal talk
the father says in a soft, gentle voice:
Thank you, thank you very much.
God bless you.

Warmth and calm
flood over me.
I sit and listen
saying nothing.

Wonderful way to sum up something so commonplace but made uncommonly special within the world of this little gem.
